Luis Fonsi is no stranger to the construction of universally successful hit songs and looks to continue to capitalize off his track record with the latest Stefflon Don-assisted “Calypso.”
As the name suggests, the new cut draws inspiration from the Caribbean calypso sound-steel drums and all-as Steff and Luis pull from their respective Jamaican and Puerto Rican roots to craft a new outing made with the summertime in mind.
With the “Calypso” video already amassing nearly 20 million views within its first 48 hours, Stefflon Don’s inclusion on what could very well prove to be the sound of the summer is only her latest feat.
Most recently, she graced the cover of XXL as this year’s sole female rapper in the Freshman Class.
Anywhere and everywhere you know I take it off Top down, all in your town, we live it up Still got an attitude and I don’t give a-Tell the DJ, money pull up when we pull up The way the thing set up.
Luis Fonsi Launches Newest Single: Calypso
Luis Fonsi sent shockwaves through the music industry last year with his Puerto Rico-focused Despacito, and the Caribbean star is at it again with his newest single: Calypso.
The new single features British-Jamaican rapper and singer Stefflon Don.
Just like Despacito, the song’s music video puts Puerto Rico at the front and center, opening on the sands of Palominito Island off the coast of Fajardo.
“I’ve been very excited about this song for a while now because of how it makes me feel every time I play it. Calypso for me represents fun, colors, Caribbean vibes, and beach, basically a good time,” Fonsi said.
“The song has a fresh sound, an island sound and it plays again with three languages, Spanish, English and even a little bit of French. When we went to the studio to record the track, I wanted to have a female voice that will give it that special touch and Stefflon Don was it. She is an incredible artist, super talented, her style and that combination of British accent with her Jamaican flavor was exactly what the song needed.”
It’s the first collaboration for Stefflon Don on a Spanish track.
“This song is lit! You are going to keep repeating it every day, is not going to come out of your head,” he said.
What If Luis Fonsi Made You a Song of the Summer Two Years in a Row?
Could Luis Fonsi’s ‘Calypso’ Be The Next ‘Despacito’?
If there’s anyone who’s cornered the market on summer, it’s Luis Fonsi.
We don’t need to tell you that he dominated the summer of 2017 with “Despacito”, but we must inform you that he’s coming for 2018, too.
Fonsi has followed up his Demi Lovato duet with “Calypso,” featuring British rapper and XXL Freshman Steflon Don.
If “Despacito” and “Échame la Culpa” were genre-contorting celebrations of Latin pop and reggaeton, “Calypso” pays homage to another side of Caribbean culture – its African heritage.
Fonsi and Steflon take it back to Puerto Rico, this time serving steel drums and reppin’ for Afro-Latinos.
In case you’re still confused on how to do summer right, let Fonsi’s pool party in this video – held at a senior resort, because you’re never too old to rage – be your guide.
