“Marvel’s Luke Cage” is returning to Netflix after a nearly two-year hiatus, and with it comes another delicious dose of Alfre Woodard as the divine Mariah Dillard. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, “Luke Cage” follows a reluctant vigilante with super strength and unbreakable skin as he protects his home neighborhood of Harlem.
A newly released trailer focuses on Mariah, a councilwoman with questionable business ties. “Black women have always had superpowers,” she says in the opening frames of the trailer. The season promises some series Voodoo, family hierarchies, death by fire, and plenty of action.
The new season of Marvel’s Luke Cage will follow Luke’s involvement in Marvel’s The Defenders. Iron Fist will appear in Luke Cage Season Two, though the exact extent of his involvement is unknown. Colter and Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker have offered some teases in the past.
In March, Netflix announced that Annabella Sciorra will play Rosalie Carbone, “a dangerous downtown criminal underworld power player with an eye, and an agenda, toward Harlem.”
This is the second Luke Cage teaser to highlight women, following a bar fight clip of Colleen and Misty teasing Marvel’s Daughters of the Dragon.
Marvel TV has always embraced badass women, but it’s exciting to see Luke Cage Season 2 go all-in on this theme.
Marvel’s Luke Cage will be released June 22nd on Netflix.
