The third installment in the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise checked in with $46.4 million when it opened in 42 international markets, while Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper” opened with $40.4 million.

Led by the voice cast of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, and Kathryn Hahn, “Hotel Transylvania 3” brought in $23 million in Latin America, including $8.6 million in Mexico, $3.8 million in Brazil, and $2.1 million in Argentina.

The family film earned $5.8 million in Russia, and $2.4 million in Australia.

Given the film’s hefty $125 million production budget, “Skyscraper” is relying on international numbers to justify the price tag.

“Skyscraper” launched in Korea with $4.7 million, Mexico with $3.7 million, and Russia with $2.6 million.

In North America, it made $16.2 million for a global weekend of $49.5 million.

Elsewhere, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” picked up another $26.7 million from 69 markets abroad. Domestically, it made $15.5 million in its fourth outing, taking its global weekend total to $42.2 million.

Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” checked in with $2.6 million on Thursday night, easily topping Dwayne Johnson’s action-thriller “Skyscraper,” which climbed to $2 million.

Recent forecasts have placed “Hotel Transylvania 3” at $38 million to $48 million when it opens at 4,267 locations.

The first “Hotel Transylvania” opened with $42.5 million in North America in 2012 on its way to $358.4 million at the worldwide box office.

In 2015, “Hotel Transylvania 2” launched with $48.5 million domestically and wound up with $473.2 million worldwide.

Johnson’s comedy-adventure “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was a major hit early this year, earning $961.8 million at the worldwide box office for Sony.

The sequel, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, has pocketed $184 million globally, including $98.7 million in North America through July 11.

“A continued box office heatwave will send many into the air-conditioned sanctuary of the multiplex to watch an animated Adam Sandler-voiced Dracula in ‘Hotel Transylvania 3,’ marvel at Dwayne Johnson scaling the box office heights in ‘Skyscraper,’ as well as a notable expansion of Boots Riley’s acclaimed and much talked about ‘Sorry to Bother You,'” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore, said.

Worldwide, “Hotel Transylvania 3” has already earned more than $100 million.

“Skyscraper” cost a reported $125 million to produce, not accounting for marketing costs.

Johnson has been a consistent presence in movie theaters this year with both “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “Rampage” prior to “Skyscraper.” Both previous films opened in the $35 million range, and while “Jumanji” went on to be a worldwide box office juggernaut, “Rampage” petered out domestically just under $100 million.

Internationally, “Skyscraper” grossed $40.4 million from 57 territories for a global total of $65.9 million.

“Incredibles 2” took fourth place with $16.2 million and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” rounded out the top five with $15.5 million.

It earned $4.3 million in its expansion for spot No. 7 on the charts.

Documentaries continue to perform well too, including the Fred Rogers doc “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” which added $1.9 million from 868 theaters, and “Three Identical Strangers” which expanded to 167 theaters and grossed $1.2 million.

Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3 topped Friday’s chart with $16.7 million for a projected debut of $41 million-$43 million, easily enough to claim the weekend crown.

Conversely, Skyscraper only scaled $9.3 million on Friday for a projected $24 million-$25 million domestic debut, marking a major disappointment for Johnson and the two studios who made the $129 million action pic, Legendary and Universal.

Heading into the weekend, pre-release tracking suggested Skyscraper would clear anywhere from $33 million-$40 million in its North American launch.

The first Hotel Transylvania debuted to $42.5 million, followed by $48.5 million for the sequel.

Hotel Transylvania 3 and Skyscraper are both battling competition from Ant-Man and the Wasp, which cleared the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday, its sixth day in release.

Hotel Transylvania 3 cost a reported $80 million to produce before marketing.

Hotel Transylvania 3 has already begun rolling out overseas, where it has grossed $6 million to date.
